NCMS Conference

Why were all the teachers out today?  We attended the NC Middle School Conference in Greensboro. Today I heard some great informtion about ways I can continue to use technology in the Language Arts classroom.  I saw new ideas for using blogs in the classroom, and within the school as a whole.  I learned about free web services that allow you to make video of class lessons, and either stream them online live, or post for viewing at a later date.  That would be cool to help absent students to catch upI I'm  very interested in trying out something called VoiceThread which allows teachers and students to make online presentations with sound and text, and images.  I heard a speaker talking about how reading and learning requires a four way stretch of the brain (facts, procedure, using imagination, and feelings). Another speaker (T Whitaker) introduced a phrase that I loved : "shift the monkey" which referred to shifting the burden of responsibility in the classroom, and I thought about even shifting our focus.  I am ready to "shift the monkey"  -- watch out for it!!  I got some great ideas that I can't wait to try out in my classroom.

I am sure that each of you missed your teachers today. While you were learning and applying knowledge today, your teachers were doing the same. Yes, teachers learn, and we need to learn new things. Today, I learned about a unique grading system that helps students to be more accountable for their grades, I also learned about some neat techniques that I can use in math class to help you learn and remember various mathematical concepts. I also learned about "Shifting the monkey" that Mrs. Allred mentioned above. We are very ready to put this strategy into action. Tomorrow, I am going to learn about some really neat projects that I can use in math class. We are also attending a dinner. Your teachers are being recognized tomorrow at the Region 5 Middle School Team of the Year. We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday. Mrs. Grissom

  2. Wow! Day 2 at the conference has been just as great so far!!! I got some ideas for using books on tape, and learned about something called RTI (response
to intervention). I am so excited to get back to school and try these ideas out and share them with my colleagues! I'm feeling really inspired to find ways that I can improve as a teacher, and work toward helping other teachers do the same.
